If you are finding that your plots have a small rectangular stamp that appears at random locations, take a closer look and you may find that it is actually an image of the NAVBAR...!
This appears to be a known issue with Civil 3D.

Contours Not Displaying???

Matching Corridor Region Parameters...

Using Shift to Select/Deselect Objects doesn't work
If using the Shift key to Select/Deselect Objects for editing is not working for you...
Type MAPIOPTIONS in the Command Line, go to the 'General' Tab and ensure that the 'Shift+Left Click Image Select' option is Unchecked.

VISRETAIN - Retain changes to Xref layers
When working with Xrefs you may find that after a reload or open, any Xref dependent layers that you have turned off or frozen have turned back on again... This is controlled by the VISRETAIN system variable.
